Character research
Expanding on notes from meeting 18/12/2017 with Charles and Alex
Olive - Drives story (See Lilu from 5th Element as total badass but still gets hurt and still needs help sometimes). Very strong woman, still very much a woman (not a male character in a woman's body). Agile and strong, martial arts, nothing to prove, don't take her on she'll mess you up. (Gogo from Big Hero 6). She's a party girl and in charge of her own happiness. Daddy's girl, 'toughen up' attitude.
"molecular crystallology researcher working with advanced nanostructures at a technology R&D lab. Educated in applied sciences since early youth by a gifted persons program"
Flaws: Headstrong and stubborn, as their fearless leader often gets them into difficult situations. Can be self serving, doesn't relate to others well, not very patient. Can be immature.
Forum of Military brats

-You feel for any kid who's having a hard-time with their parent(s) being deployed.
-You've picked up on a lot of military jargon/slang from your mother/father.
-You may have learned how to handle a weapon at a very young age.
-MOTHERFUCKING MRE's
-Your father/mother bring you back a lot of cool trinkets from wherever they were deployed.
-The term "HOOAH" is more than just some word to you.
"We've been lucky and moved only 3 times over a 22 year period. I've been transferred to more than 9 schools. So I never made any stable friends."
i remember my dad used to tell me, "If the military wanted me to have a family, they would've issued me one." (cute story of the parents being put together on a mission and meeting that way?)
Clothing: Wears dad's old jacket from the 80's and big boots. Trendy, slightly glam punk when going out. Very simple and practical when working, wears lab coat etc.
Very practical so no piercings or tattoos (no time for that, no strong peer pressure due to moving, hazard in martial training)
Martial arts: Tang Soo Do (Korean with outside influence such as karate and kung fu) Brief history
Bern - Very intelligent but very humble. Doesn't understand American culture and points out obscurities. Very kiwi, very warm and funny and gets along with everyone. Rough background, can show a darker side of NZ like Taika Waititi. 'hot guy', very smart, social and attractive so gets a lot of attention. Only has eyes for Liv. (previously discussed as having drive to be the best and smartest and win the scholarship so he can support his family)
Flaws: Insecure about his intelligence and underestimates himself. Struggles with family issues, hurts him that he's not there to help, blames himself and takes on too much responsibility.
At times he and Liv rub each other the wrong way but are also each other's emotional support, their relationship is more than friends but not necessarily sexual. They respect each other a lot.
Clothing: Casual Kiwi. Stubbies and singlet on hot day. Jandles.
Maya - Always in the shadow of her older brother, not interested in boys or relationships, just wants to get ahead in her field. Family wants her married off, she's an over achiever and wants to prove her worth to them. Not very social, gets straight A's. 'Miss perfect', very pretty. Cynical, dark sense of humour.
Flaws: Distrustful, quick to judge, assumes the worst in human nature. Like a jaded 60 y/o English academic.
Note: Would this character be better suited to having asperges than Rex?
Clothing: Elegant and modern twist on traditional, goes full traditional for events. Various adornments and piercings, appropriate hena for events. Good reference
Cristo - *avoid 'token black guy' tropes* Just your average Joe. He's a gamer but forced to play outside by parents. Very hands on, likes to tinker and explore, good with people, likes puzzle solving and technical things (e.g. builds own computer to get the best one for gaming). Millennial kid, physical fit and capable but not an athlete. Likes raps music and electronic, bmx biking. He's empathic and wants everyone to be happy, doesn't understand when people don't get along or there's conflict in the group.
Flaws: Too confident that he can tinker his way out of any situation. Works for him on earth but gets them into trouble else where. Doesn't deal well with conflict and shies away from confrontation.
Clothing: Casual, T-shirt and jeans.
Rex - Danish, doesn't give a fuck, very relaxed and accidentally funny. Descended from viking, terns up randomly at (fancy dress?) parties dressed in drag. Pattern recognition and numbers,
Clothing: Smart casual European; knitted cardies, scarves, collar showing under sweater, coloured pants etc. One piercing on ear, few closed holes - used to be metal head?
